Travel to Zermatt by car

Zermatt is a car-free destination!

Access by private car is only permitted to Täsch, which is situated 5 km from Zermatt. The road from Täsch to Zermatt is closed for public traffic. There are shuttle trains every 20 minutes in each direction between Täsch and Zermatt.

There are different possibilities for car-parking in Täsch - The Matterhorn Terminal in Täsch has 2,100 covered parking spaces (cars with height up to 2.30 meters). From the Terminal you can easily change to the shuttle train to Zermatt.

In addition to the Matterhorn Terminal, there are over 1,000 parking spaces (indoor and outdoor) offered by private parties, which as well offer a taxi service to Zermatt (incl. luggage transport):

Travel to Zermatt by train

Travelling to car-free Zermatt by train is definitely a convenient option. With the Intercity Trains you reach Visp where you change to the mountain railway of the Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn. All trains have bike racks installed (usually at each end of the trains).

Recommendations when travelling by train:

  • Try to book your train ticket early, then you can profit from special saver tickets (day pass) - more information
  • Travelling by train with a lot of luggage, no problem! You can check-in your luggage at the airport (home destination) or at different train stations in Switzerland (2 days before arrival) and then pick it up in Zermatt on arrival day - more information
  • People travelling with the Swiss Travel Pass, GA or Half-fare travelcard profit from 50% discount on bike tickets with Zermatt Bergbahnen (cable way) - more information

The shuttle train between Täsch and Zermatt runs usually every 20 minutes. On the weekend the trains also run every hour during the night - so you can easily make it to Täsch even after the party on Saturday night!
